CT Wine Guide & Passport

February - May 2022

The App & The Redesign

The CT Wine Guide & Passport was an existing app where users could travel across the state of Connecticut to visit different wineries. At each winery an individual visits, they receive a virtual passport “stamp.” Users were incentivized with several prizes to visit as many participating wineries as possible and receive their stamp.

I worked on this redesign concept with the very talented Brandi Pinette to showcase teamwork within mobile interaction design. We collectively decided that the app could use a more modern and accessible redesign.

Empathize

We conducted a user survey to gain a deeper understanding of the demographics and interests of the app’s target audience. This information was used to help determine which features would benefit the users most within the app.

The results were used to make informed decisions regarding the development of personas and empathy maps to ensure the redesign was being developed with the target audience in mind.

Check out the data summary of our survey!

Personas were developed to represent the different user types that exist within the target audience. They were frequently referenced throughout the redesign process to ensure that the project scope matched the goals and motivations of the target audience

Research

We then researched to learn more about the strengths, weaknesses, and areas of opportunity that existed within the market of existing applications.

The main goals of the research stage were based on the information found from survey responses and the overall project goal to support the target audience.

Research Goals:

  • Understand the existing market and identify potential areas of opportunity to capitalize on

  • Identify the common strengths and weaknesses of competitors’ applications in the market

  • Develop a product design strategy to meet the needs of the target audience

With a list of research goals, we conducted a competitive analysis with two wine-tasting and tracking apps. We was able to identify features of each application that users enjoyed as well as aspects that they disliked.

Ideate

In the ideation phase, we crafted an information architecture to establish the framework for the app’s content and features, along with a structured navigation layout.

We prioritized several key features from the foundational research and empathy phases, such as a winery index, wine pairings, and a wine passport.

Prototype

With an information architecture to reference, we created sketched wireframes for the application to strengthen an understanding of user interaction. Each screen was designed with the target audience, personas, and empathy maps in mind to ensure the designs supported users in achieving their goals.

Prototype

After assessing each screen, we moved into designing the user interface for the application. Starting with brand ideation and development to nail down the look and feel of the app.

Each screen was then fully developed with the final UI in Adobe XD and prototyped in Invision for testing to ensure that the user interface and interaction design were functional.
